SEALANTS & CAVITY PREVENTION

Seal Light-cure, the child in the dental office

Some people are just more prone to tooth decay than others. If you get more cavities than the average person, preventive care and regular dental appointments are more important than ever. Highland dentist Dr. Larsen will check your mouth and evaluate your risk for cavities and gum disease. For high-risk patients, Dr. Larsen may recommend more frequent trips to the office and caries prevention methods like fluoride and sealants.

What are Sealants?

Dental sealant is a tooth-colored plastic coating that protects the chewing surfaces of the teeth, where the majority of decay occurs. Your Highland dentist paints the sealant on the grooves of your back teeth (molars and premolars), sealing them off from plaque acids and bacteria.

Applying sealant is a quick procedure that takes about five minutes per tooth. The dentist prepares the tooth enamel by softening it with a weak acid. This makes the sealant stick to the surface more easily. When the surface is completely dry, the plastic coating is painted on the grooves of the tooth. The sealant bonds quickly and forms a shield over the enamel. Sealants can protect your teeth from cavities for up to a decade, but your dentist must check them regularly for wear or cracks. A broken sealant can be replaced easily.

Do You Need Sealants?

Sealants are usually recommended for children and teenagers, but adults can also benefit. Anyone who is highly at risk for dental caries should consider sealants. Children and teenagers are good candidates, and it is recommended to get sealants on the permanent molars and premolars as soon as these teeth erupt. In some cases, your dentist may recommend sealants to protect baby teeth that have deep pits and grooves.

  • “I am super super picky about my teeth so after 5 years of commuting 50 minutes to my older dentist I had to find a closer dentist that could meet my high standards. After 6, yes 6 different dentists I tried I found Dr Larsen. He is particular, and conservative. He is very knowledgeable in his practices and doesn’t go drilling away on teeth that don’t need it. He makes you feel comfortable and explains treatment with you before he does anything. His staff are all so nice. I’m totally hard to please and he exceeded my expectations. I even dare say he is better than my all time favorite dentist. Give him a try. You will be glad you did.”
