“While training, triathletes and runners consume a lot of carbs — specifically sports drinks, bars, and gels — which can lower the mouth’s pH level and lead to tooth erosion and cavities. Also, they breathe heavily through their mouths during training, and that can dry out teeth-protecting saliva,” Glamour magazine writes. Being extra vigilant about brushing and flossing and chewing gum (to produce more saliva) can help runners and endurance sports athletes, if they catch the problem early on.

A new study published in The Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports shows runners and endurance sports athletes suffer from runner’s mouth — and (although it is a problem) that doesn’t indicate dry mouth alone. Runners are also much more likely to have cavities and even eventually lose their teeth. What gives? Breathing heavily reduces the saliva in runner’s mouths, making it an ideal environment for bacteria to grow. Runners also pound sports drinks with high concentrations of sugar as well as citric and phosphoric acid. This combination will destroy your teeth. The acids wear away tooth enamel while the sugar causes cavities and tooth decay, top cosmetic dentists explain.

Endurance athletes should be hyper-aware of their dental and oral hygiene, but they should also know that correcting the problem retroactively — after many years of running — is more than possible.
